New six-knot limit for Manly Boat Harbour entrance
The six-knot speed limit on the entrance channel to Manly Boat harbour has been extended to improve boating safety.
Maritime Safety Queensland General Manager Patrick Quirk said the speed limit inside the boat harbour had always been six knots and this short extension moved the limit about 400 metres out into the bay.
“This is designed to simply make it easier and safer for recreational boaties,” Mr Quirk said.
“Maritime Safety Queensland has been working with other members of the Queensland Recreational Boating Council to make sure speed limits reflect the usage of the harbour.
“More and more people are taking up recreational boating and making sure everyone has safe and comfortable access to our world class coastal waters is important, especially in popular locations like Manly Boat Harbour,” Mr Quirk said.
“Of course, boaties should always keep a good lookout for dangers and be aware of the boating environment, especially in bad weather, restricted visibility or darkness.
“Make your movements clear and deliberate so that other masters can see your intentions and never assume the master of another boat will observe the rules — always be prepared to take action to avoid a collision.”
This new speed limit extends along the channel from the Boat Harbour in a north easterly direction to Entrance Channel beacon number five.
