MSQ monitors ship aground near Thursday Island

Maritime Safety Queensland is monitoring an 80 metre general cargo vessel that has run aground near Bamaga, off Cape York at 3 am today.

The vessel, named Trinity Bay, ran aground on a sand bar near the Red Island Point Jetty near Bamaga.

Maritime Safety Queensland has had no reports of damage to the vessel or of pollutants entering the water.

Pollution control equipment is being transferred from Thursday Island by barge as a precautionary measure.

The Trinity Bay’s owners are transferring cargo and fuel to a standby vessel in order to lighten the grounded ship in preparation for an attempt to refloat on the next high tide (early Tuesday morning).

The vessel will then be inspected before being allowed to proceed.

The Trinity Bay is a Queensland registered ship which operates a weekly passenger and cargo run from Cairns to Thursday Island and Cape York.

Maritime Safety Queensland has started an investigation into the incident.
