Prepare for Christmas king tide
A summer king tide is predicted for Christmas Day in south east and central Queensland so boaties need to be prepared.
Maritime Safety Queensland General Manager Patrick Quirk urged boat owners and those with properties along coastal and river frontages to be prepared this Christmas
“It’s best if people secure or move their tinnies, kayaks, garden furniture or any other items away from the water’s edge to avoid them being swept up in the higher tides,” Mr Quirk said.
“It’s also advisable to clear away any flood debris including loose pontoons and foliage to prevent any washing back into the river."
“Boaties entering the waterways also need to be extra vigilant around these peak tides.”
Mr Quirk said the highest tides across the state throughout January and February would also approach king tide levels. These tides are predicted in a range of tidal information publications including the Queensland Tide Tables 2012.
“Despite its impressive sounding name a king tide is simply the highest tide experienced at any location,” Mr Quirk said.
“They’re a natural occurrence when the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun come closest to the earth."
“However severe weather, including severe storms or strong winds, can also contribute to the sea level elevated to above the expected height.”
