Who we are and what we do

Organisational profile

Maritime Safety Queensland was established on 1 October 2002 to provide safe and sustainable vessel movements in Queensland waters, enhanced regional maritime service delivery and better safety and environmental outcomes for the maritime industry and the broader community. Maritime Safety Queensland contributes strongly to Department of Transport and Main Roads' key result areas of:

  • a sustainable transport system which promotes economic growth and enhances liveability
  • a safe transport system leading to improved health and wellbeing for Queenslanders
  • an accessible transport system linking people to employment, education, services and social networks
  • transport-related impacts on the natural, cultural and built environments managed for the community
  • enhanced leadership and stakeholder relationships, improving transport outcomes for Queensland.

Maritime Safety Queensland manages vessels and their movement through inland waterways and along a mainland coastline that spans 7400 kilometres with another 2400 kilometres of offshore island coastline. This coastline is environmentally sensitive containing many marine parks.

Maritime activities contribute significantly to both the economy and lifestyle of Queensland. It is essential that Maritime Safety Queensland effectively identifies and manages the risks of the activities that are not managed or cannot be managed by operators.

Through a focus on effective risk management, Maritime Safety Queensland promotes maritime safety, protects the marine environment and provides essential maritime services by:

  • regulating the maritime industry and recreational boat users for safety outcomes
  • regulating the maritime industry to reduce the incidence of ship-sourced pollution incidents
  • developing and delivering targeted maritime safety and marine pollution education and industry awareness campaigns
  • developing response strategies for combating ship-sourced pollution in all Queensland waters
  • coordinating the response to ship-sourced marine pollution incidents
  • monitoring and managing the movement of vessels in Queensland waters, particularly in environmentally sensitive areas such as the Great Barrier Reef and high risk areas such as within port limits
  • providing port pilotage services in most Queensland ports
  • providing maritime information services such as notices to mariners, hydrographic survey, aids to navigation, tidal information and cartographic services
  • contributing to the national agenda for maritime safety, security and pollution and implementing processes and activities to support agreed national objectives
  • providing new and upgraded recreational boating infrastructure
  • dredging of channels for small craft
  • managing state boat harbours.
