Career paths in the maritime industry

Below is a diagram showing possible paths for progressing through a career in the maritime industry. Click on the marine licence name to go to the notes for guidance of candidates.

Deck marine licences

You can obtain a Coxswain, Master Class 5 or Skipper Grade 3 certificate (entry level licences) without having held any previous marine licence provided you can meet the prerequisites, sea service requirements, successfully undertake a training course and pass an oral exam.

Engineering marine licences

You can obtain a Marine Engine Driver Grade 3, Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 or Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 licence (entry level licences) without having held any previous licence provided you can meet the prerequisites, sea service requirements, successfully undertake a training course and pass an oral exam.
