If you hold an unrestricted marine licence issued in Queensland and want to work in another state or territory, you should check with that state or territory marine authority.
Restricted marine licences, certificates of service and certificates of recognition issued in Queensland are only valid for use in Queensland waters. If you have one of these licences or certificates and want to operate in another state or territory, you will need to meet the requirements detailed in these Marine Information Bulletins about mutual recognition and licence changes:
- restricted certificates of competency
- certificates of recognition
- certificates of service.
If you have a current and valid unrestricted Uniform Shipping Laws Code certificate of competency issued by another state or territory you can use this in Queensland. If your certificate of competency has a restriction, contact a Maritime Safety Queensland regional office.
Overseas
STCW 95 is the International Convention for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers developed by the International Maritime Organization which laid down a minimum standard of training and certification.
You will need an STCW 95 endorsement if you want to work on ships overseas or on a foreign voyage and have a certificate of competency as:
- Marine Engine Driver Grade 1
- Engineer Class 3.
How do I have my marine licence endorsed?
- Apply to your nearest Australian Maritime Safety Authority office for details.
- The issuing state or territory marine authority will review the training undertaken to obtain your marine licence and advise if any further training is required. When all training requirements have been met, you will be provided with a statement from the state or territory marine authority which you will need to provide to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
The following marine licences are not eligible for STCW 95 endorsement:
- Master Class 3, Master Class 4, Master Class 5, Coxswain, Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 and Marine Engine Driver Grade 2
- Skipper Grade 3, Skipper Grade 2 and Skipper Grade 1
- certificates of service or recognition
- restricted marine licences.
