Medical and eyesight standards

You must have a medical examination to show that you are physically fit to carry out the duties required for your marine licence. There is an approved form which must be completed by your doctor. This certificate is valid for two years.

Your eyesight may be tested by your doctor or optometrist. Where there are difficulties meeting the required standard, contact your nearest Maritime Safety Queensland regional office to discuss your options. If minimum standards are not met, a licence may not be issued.

You must be tested for visual acuity (long and short sightedness) and colour perception. This certificate is valid for two years.

Should you need to wear glasses or contact lenses to pass the eyesight examination, your marine licence will reflect this.

It is important that you undertake an eyesight examination when commencing steps to obtain a marine licence. Some people find out that they have an eyesight problem that they were not aware of, such as problems with colour vision. If this occurs, it may affect the marine licence you are wishing to obtain. For example colour perception difficulties require that the marine licence be restricted for daylight operations only, Queensland jurisdiction only (this is applicable to entry level licences only).
