Boating Infrastructure Capital and Maintenance Program
Maritime Safety Queensland continues to work closely with major stakeholders to identify priority projects around Queensland. The need for potential new or upgraded facilities are identified through an annual bid-proposal process where requests are received by local councils and port authorities. Projects are then considered for inclusion in the Maritime Safety Queensland-managed Boating Infrastructure Capital and Maintenance Program.
Maritime Safety Queensland has recently conducted a recreational boating facilities demand forecasting study to assist in identifying the need for future boating infrastructure. The final reports are currently being compiled from the consultation responses. The outcomes identified in these reports will assist local councils and port authorities when considering future bid proposals. More information about the demand forecasting study.
The Boating Infrastructure Capital and Maintenance Program provides funds for:
- public recreational boating facilities for launching and retrieving vessels
- maintaining depths in channels to ensure access to high-use recreational boating facilities
- new and upgraded pontoons at boat ramps, where there are sufficiently sheltered conditions
- pontoons and jetties for deeper-draught vessels for pick up and set down of passengers.
Bid proposals are submitted to Boating Infrastructure and Waterways Management regional officers (PDF, 21 KB) who assess the bids with a view to including successful projects in its three-year rolling program of works. If supported at a regional level, they are then forwarded to Boating Infrastructure and Waterways Management Branch for further consideration. Submissions are evaluated and prioritised, taking into consideration criteria such as:
- government priority for funding allocation
- assessment against state government policy
- equitable state-wide allocation of funding
- technical feasibility
- potential environmental impacts
- pre-construction status operational issues
- remote area access
- benefit/cost ratio.
Successful bids are included in the following three-year rolling program of works. The majority of projects are scheduled over two years with design and approvals in the first year and construction in the second year. The bid process for the 2011–12 program of funding has now closed. General information about the bid proposal process.
