Recreational boating infrastructure projects
The more people enjoy boating in Queensland, the more pressure there is on recreational facilities such as ramps, pontoons and jetties. Maritime Safety Queensland owns and manages 304 public boat ramps, 28 pontoons, 42 jetties, nine floating walkways, three barge/boat ramps and two wharves at various locations throughout Queensland. More information about public boating facilities.
Maritime Safety Queensland is working in partnership with local government, port authorities and private developers to deliver recreational boating infrastructure for Queenslanders.
The joint partnership responsibility
While Maritime Safety Queensland builds recreational boating facilities, local governments and port authorities manage and provide the land-based facilities, for example car parks. These authorities are also responsible for:
- funding and maintaining ancillary facilities including car and trailer parking, lighting and amenities blocks
- maintaining the condition of the facilities to a standard appropriate to their use which includes day-to-day maintenance of the facility
- ensuring only authorised users such as recreational boaties use the facility and comply with the load limit of five tonnes.
