Gold Coast Waterways Steering Committee

The Gold Coast Waterways Steering Committee (WSC) is a partnership between state and local government and industry to cooperatively improve the provision and quality of coastal, foreshore and waterway infrastructure within Gold Coast City.

The WSC is governed by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that establishes the basis and framework for managing shared interests, including:

  • Identifying infrastructure priorities and value for money opportunities.
  • Improving accessibility throughout Gold Coast waterways and to adjacent inland waterways and coastal waters.
  • Recognising environmental values, coastal processes and amenity.
  • Contributing to a sustainable community and healthy lifestyle by providing waterway access to natural open space areas and recreational facilities.
  • Contributing to continued economic prosperity of the Gold Coast and Queensland by supporting employment within the marine, tourism, and development sectors.

No new powers are created by the MOU, nor does it devolve any responsibilities held by the parties to the WSC. Rather, the WSC simply provides a mechanism for coordinating existing powers and resources held independently by the parties, to facilitate improved outcomes on issues where jurisdictions and interests overlap.

The committee itself is comprised of five delegates, acting on behalf of the parties to the MOU – Gold Coast City Council (GCCC), Marine Queensland and the three signatory agencies for the state, the departments of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), Environment and Resource Management (DERM), Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI). The current WSC members are:

  • General Manager, Maritime Safety Queensland, TMR
  • Director, Integrated Planning, DERM
  • Executive Regional Director, DEEDI
  • Director, Economic Development and Major Projects, GCCC
  • Chief Executive Officer, Marine Queensland.

The WSC is supported by three working groups, whose purpose and membership is defined in schedules to the MOU. Working group members are officers from the parties to the MOU. The three specified working groups are:

  • dredging
  • destinations, access and management
  • marine industry planning and major development projects.

Meetings

The WSC and its working groups meet at least quarterly and the meeting outcomes will be made available.

Waterways Steering Committee projects

  • Broadwater Masterplan – the masterplan will be a guide for the long-term use of the Broadwater, including the management of waterway and land use. The masterplan will be created with input from the community and consider environmental and economic impacts.
