Torres Strait Islands Marine Infrastructure Program
Location: Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area
Timing: 6 year program with expected completion in mid-2028

We are working with local councils to repair and upgrade priority marine facilities in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area. This will improve safety and access between communities in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area.

Key features
- 'Make safe' repairs to council-owned marine facilities in the Torres Strait Island Regional Council area.
- Construction of a new boating facility on Waibene (Thursday Island), to replace the disused ramp and rock wall at Quarantine.
- Repair and replace recreational and commercial marine facilities at Seisia, in line with the Northern Peninsula Area Marine Hub Master Plan.
Funding
The Queensland Government has committed $40 million to this program through the Maritime Infrastructure Investment Program.
Current Status
Repairs to reopen the damaged jetty at Badu are on-track for completion before the end of July 2024. Torres Strait Island Regional Council identified Badu jetty as its highest priority following completion of repairs at Dauan jetty. The repairs will improve safety and access for residents and jetty users.
We will work with Torres Strait Island Regional Council to identify further 'make safe' priorities.
We have commenced planning and design for the proposed new boating facility at Quarantine, in consultation with Torres Strait Island Regional Council. Community consultation will be undertaken in the coming months.
Completed Works
In early 2023, we completed urgent repairs to re-open the jetty at Dauan.
